Sara Thornton's *Bücher Advertising, Subjectivity and the Nineteenth-Century Novel* offers a groundbreaking examination of the complex and often overlooked relationship between the burgeoning world of book advertising in nineteenth-century Britain and the evolving concept of individual subjectivity as depicted and shaped by the period's novels.
Published by Palgrave, an academic press known for its scholarly contributions, the book investigates how the practices and discourses of literary advertising - from newspaper announcements and periodical reviews to blurbs and paratextual materials - profoundly influenced not only the commercial success of novels but also their thematic content and the ways in which readers understood themselves and the world.
Thornton argues that book advertisements were not simply commercial tools, but potent cultural artifacts that actively participated in the construction and negotiation of modern subjectivity. She analyzes how the language, imagery, and placement of advertisements created new models of selfhood, encouraged particular reading practices, and reflected anxieties and aspirations of the era. By connecting the material conditions of literary production (how books were promoted and sold) with the formal and thematic concerns of the novels themselves, the book reveals a deeper interdependency between commerce and culture.
Drawing on a rich archive of primary sources, including publishing records, literary periodicals, and a wide array of novels by prominent authors such as Charles Dickens, George Eliot, Wilkie Collins, and other key figures of the Victorian age, Thornton demonstrates how advertising influenced character portrayal, narrative structure, and the very concept of the "individual" in Victorian fiction. She shows how novels both mirrored and critiqued the consumerist logic and identity-shaping power of advertising, often exploring themes of self-fashioning, authenticity, and social performance in ways that directly engaged with the burgeoning commercial media landscape.
This interdisciplinary study skillfully bridges literary criticism, the history of the book, cultural studies, and the history of advertising. It offers a fresh perspective on the interplay between commerce and culture, challenging traditional views of advertising as purely external to art and revealing its deep imbrication in the making of the modern self and the modern novel.
