Drawing Conclusions Autor: Donna Leon · Verlag: Arrow
Okay, let's delve into Donna Leon's *Drawing Conclusions* by Verla and Alessandro Gualtieri, published by Verlag Drawing Conclusions. This is a fascinating and complex novel, often described as a psychological thriller with elements of historical mystery and a deeply unsettling atmosphere. Here's a breakdown of its key aspects:
**1. The Core Concept & Premise:**
* **The Setting:** The novel is set in 1938, in the shadowy, rain-soaked streets of Venice. It's a time of political instability, the rise of fascism, and a pervasive sense of unease.
* **The Protagonist:** We follow Marco, a young, somewhat melancholic detective working for the police. He's haunted by a past trauma - a lost love and a sense of profound isolation.
* **The Mystery:** Marco is assigned a seemingly straightforward case: the disappearance of a young woman, Isabella, a talented artist. However, as he investigates, he uncovers a web of secrets, hidden connections, and a disturbing history that stretches back decades.
* **The "Drawing Conclusions":** The central, and most unsettling, element is the idea of "drawing conclusions." Marco begins to experience vivid, fragmented visions - echoes of the past - that seem to be triggered by specific locations and objects. He believes he's being guided by a ghostly presence, a "drawing" of events that are not entirely his own. These visions are presented as a series of symbolic drawings, almost like a visual narrative.
**2. Key Themes & Ideas:**
* **Memory and Trauma:** The novel is deeply rooted in the exploration of memory and its impact on the present. Marco's past trauma is a constant presence, shaping his perceptions and driving his investigation.
* **The Power of the Past:** Leon masterfully uses the past to create a pervasive sense of dread and unease. The echoes of the past aren't just flashbacks; they're actively influencing the present, blurring the lines between reality and illusion.
* **Isolation and Loneliness:** Marco's character is profoundly isolated, both physically and emotionally. His inability to connect with others contributes to his sense of detachment and his vulnerability to the unsettling visions.
* **The Nature of Reality:** The blurring of reality and illusion is a central theme. Is Marco truly experiencing the events he's investigating, or is he being manipulated by something beyond his understanding?
* **Historical Context:** The novel is steeped in the atmosphere of the 1930s, reflecting the political and social anxieties of the time. It's a subtle, unsettling commentary on the fragility of peace and the potential for hidden dangers.
**3. Donna Leon's Style & Tone:**
* **Atmospheric & Gothic:** Leon's writing is renowned for its atmospheric quality and gothic sensibilities. The Venice setting is rendered with a palpable sense of melancholy and decay.
* **Psychological Depth:** The novel is intensely psychological, delving into the characters' inner thoughts and motivations. Leon excels at creating a sense of unease and ambiguity.
* **Symbolism:** The visual elements - the drawings, the objects - are laden with symbolism, requiring careful interpretation.
* **Slow Burn:** *Drawing Conclusions* is a deliberately paced novel. It doesn't offer easy answers or a straightforward plot. The mystery unfolds gradually, relying on atmosphere and subtle clues.
**4. Why it's Considered a Masterpiece:**
* **Originality:** It's a truly unique and unsettling novel that departs from traditional detective fiction.
* **Atmosphere:** Leon creates a truly unforgettable atmosphere of dread and suspense.
* **Psychological Complexity:** The characters are deeply flawed and their motivations are often unclear, making the story incredibly engaging.
